For the first time the tournament for the Polish championship took place in the coastal city of Jurata in June 1937. The great foreign chess masters were: Gedeon Stahlberg (Sweden), Vasja Pirc (Yugoslavia), Jan Foltys (Czechoslovakia), Lajos Steiner (Hungary) and Erik Andersen (Denmark). Polish players participated: Izaak Appel. Achilles Frydman, Edward Gerstenfeld, Teodor Regedziński and Abraham Szpiro (all over the world – Łódź), Jerzy Jagielski, Leon Kremer, Mojżesz Łowcki, Mieczysław Najdorf and Karol Piltz (Warsaw). Poznań), Professor Stanisław Zawadzki (Sosnowiec) and Dr. Kaswery Tartakower (Paris). Only Makowski and Paulin Frydman were missing at the top, and the following districts were not represented: Vilnius and Krakow. Although only 3 months passed from the moment of the decision in the General Assembly of the Polish Chess Federation until the start of the tournament, the event was successful and quickly organized by Dawid Przepiórka and Colonel Stefan Steifer. The sponsor of the tournament was Brigadier General Kazimierz Sosnkowski – Chairman of the Honorary Committee, Władysław Raczkiewicz – Governor of Pomerania, Rear Admiral Józef Unrug – Member of the Committee of Honor, Brigadier General Wiktor Thomee, Colonel Kazimierz Glabisz – President of the Polish Olympic Committee, and the president of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Pomerania, Stanisław Tor. The participants were accommodated in a luxurious hotel «Lido» on the Hel Peninsula.
The prizes were: I – 400 zlotys, II – 300, III – 200, IV – 150, V – 125, VI – 100, VII – 75, VIII – 60, IX – 50, X – 40 and XI – 30 zlotys ( 1 PLN = 4 $ US). Three prizes were awarded to the most beautiful chess games (brilliance prize).
